Got Burned? Do’s and Don’ts For Treating Severe Burns

Do's & Don'ts

Proper burn treatment can ease pain, aid in the healing process, and reduce the likelihood of an infection. It helps tremendously to know what to do in the event of a severe burn! Keep this list of Do’s and Don’ts handy just in case you or a loved one experience getting burned.

DO’S

  • DO remove clothing and jewelry that has been burned or soaked in hot chemicals / fluids
  • DO run tap water or room temperature water over a burn immediately
  • DO apply a clean dry cloth to the burned area after it is cooled and seek medical care

DON’TS 

  • DON’T remove burned clothes that is stuck to the body
  • DON’T use very cold water or ice on a burn
  • DON’T apply ointments, jellies, sprays or first aid creams to severe burns
  • DON’T break open small blisters with clear fluid
